Overview Of The Role:

  • The Commercial Department Manager oversees daily operations within the Marks and Spencer store, focusing on delivering excellent sales and customer service within the food and hospitality sector. This role requires strategic planning of people resources, optimal stock management, and ensuring sales targets are met through efficient service and operations. Crucially, the manager enhances the shopping experience by engaging personally with customers, while also leading and developing a committed team to meet both service and operational standards. The manager plays a key role in driving profitability through effective cost management and loss minimization.

What You Will Do:

Sales


  • Coordinate people resources and activities to ensure proper staffing to deliver the sales plan.
  • Participate in commercial walk rounds with the Store Manager and visitors.
  • Complete probes and ensure actions are delivered as per protocols.
  • Stay updated with key communication documents and take appropriate action.
  • Organize resources to ensure optimum stock levels are maintained throughout the trading day.
  • Coordinate deliveries and operations in line with FIFO to manage stock accuracy and shelf availability.
  • Oversee the implementation of corporate layouts, phase changes, floor plans, and planograms.

Service


  • Ensure all zones, tills, and key service areas are adequately resourced to meet customer demands.
  • Address customer queries, concerns, and complaints effectively.
  • Enhance customer shopping experiences by engaging with them and making personal connections.
  • Model and enforce the 'Service - Doing the Right Thing' mantra and key service behaviors: Being Positive, Being Determined, Taking Ownership & Responsibility, and Being Respectful.
  • Provide feedback to team members regarding service delivery and recognize excellent service performance.

Standards


  • Coordinate resources to maintain 'packet perfect' trading standards.
  • Guide and provide feedback on hygiene standards to customer assistants.
  • Ensure service point standards are maintained consistently throughout the day.
  • Oversee due diligence activities to ensure safe and legal trading practices.
  • Prepare and complete compliance paperwork for sign-off and manage locker checks for dual control compliance.

People Management


  • Communicate effectively with teams through briefs and huddles to keep them engaged and informed.
  • Provide regular feedback and recognition to team members, fostering a supportive work environment.
  • Understand and act on Engagement Survey scores to drive improvement in team dynamics.
  • Develop talent through effective planning and ensure recruitment processes meet team needs.

Costs and Profitability


  • Plan and allocate staffing resources to meet operational needs within budget constraints.
  • Review transaction data to improve performance and reduce idle time on tills.
  • Manage holiday ceilings to ensure operational requirements are met without exceeding budget constraints.
  • Implement effective absence management processes using the return to work procedure.


Required Skills To Be Successful:

  • Strong leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Proficiency in sales target achievement and customer service delivery.
  • Expertise in stock management and operational efficiency.

What Qualifies You For The Role:

  • High school diploma is required; a university degree is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in retail or Food & Beverage sales.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and F&B hygiene certification.
  • Proven ability to connect with customers and demonstrate positivity, determination, respect, and responsibility.
